Asim Malik Director-General of ISI and National Security Advisor

Muhammad Asim Malik, HI(M), is a distinguished Pakistani three-star general and the current Director-General of Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI), a position he has held since September 30, 2024. He is notable for being the first PhD holder to be appointed as the head of Pakistan's premier intelligence agency. Furthermore, on April 30, 2025, he became the 10th National Security Advisor (NSA) to the Prime Minister of Pakistan, marking the first time a serving ISI chief has simultaneously held both critical roles.

Early Life and Education

Born into a Punjabi Awan family with ancestral roots in Shahpur, Sargodha District, Asim Malik was the son of Lt. Gen. (R.) Ghulam Muhammad Malik. His academic achievements are exceptional for a military officer, combining high-level tactical training with advanced academic research.

• BSc (Hons): University of Balochistan (1999).
• Mountain Warfare Thesis: Completed at Fort Leavenworth, USA, titled Mountain Warfare: The Need for Specialist Training.
• Advanced Studies: Attended the Royal College of Defence Studies in the United Kingdom.
• Doctorate: Obtained a PhD on US-Pakistan relations from the National Defence University.
• Military Training: Graduate of the Pakistan Military Academy's 80th Long Course, where he was the recipient of the Sword of Honour.

Military Career and Command

Commissioned into the 12th Baloch Regiment in 1989, Asim Malik's career has been spanned by a variety of command, staff, and instructional assignments. He has served as the Chief Instructor at the National Defence University in Islamabad and an instructor at the Pakistan Command and Staff College in Quetta.

Command Experience

As a Major General, he led the 41st Infantry Division in Balochistan and commanded an Infantry Brigade in Waziristan. He also served as a Director of Military Operations (DMO) as a Brigadier.

Elevation to Adjutant-General

In October 2021, Lt. Gen. Malik was appointed as the Adjutant General (AG) at GHQ, Rawalpindi, by then COAS General Qamar Javed Bajwa. In this capacity, he oversaw critical investigations, including those related to the May 9 riots and the court-martial proceedings of former DG-ISI Lt. Gen. Faiz Hameed.

Leadership of the ISI and National Security

On September 23, 2024, it was announced that Asim Malik would succeed Nadeem Anjum as the DG-ISI. His appointment came during a period of political instability and rising militancy. He is viewed as a trusted confidant of COAS General Asim Munir, both having received the Sword of Honour during their respective PMA courses.

Role as National Security Advisor

His appointment as NSA on April 30, 2025, filled a vacancy that had existed since April 2022. During the 2025 India-Pakistan standoff, his dual role as ISI chief and NSA allowed for a unified command structure, which he is credited with restoring public confidence in the intelligence community. For his contributions during this conflict, he was awarded the Sitara-e-Basalat.

Publications and Honors

Lt. Gen. Asim Malik is recognized for his academic contributions to military science, specifically his 2003 publication on mountain warfare. He has received several military decorations, including the Crescent of Excellence, the General Service Medal, the Nuclear Test Medal (1998), and the Escalation with India Medal (2002).
