Audible is an American online audiobook and podcast service that allows users to purchase and stream audiobooks and other forms of spoken-word content. As the United States' largest audiobook producer and retailer, Audible is a wholly owned subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc., headquartered in Newark, New Jersey.

History and Evolution

The company began in 1997 with its first product, the Audible MobilePlayer, a portable media player with four megabytes of flash memory. Over the years, the service has evolved from a hardware-focused company to a digital service provider. Key milestones include a $11 million investment from Microsoft in 1999 and the acquisition by Amazon in 2008 for approximately $300 million.

Audible's growth was further accelerated by strategic partnerships, such as an exclusive agreement with Apple's iTunes Music Store that lasted until 2017. The service also introduced innovative features like Audible Air in 2005, which allowed for automatic chapter downloads on PDAs and smartphones.

Expanding the Ecosystem

In 2011, Audible launched the Audiobook Creation Exchange (ACX), an online marketplace and production platform that connected authors and rights holders with narrators and producers. This platform proved highly successful, providing a large volume of titles to the service.

To enhance the user experience, Audible introduced Whispersync for Voice in 2012, allowing users to seamlessly transition between reading a Kindle ebook and listening to the audiobook version of the same title.

Content and Pricing Models

Audible's extensive library includes over 200,000 audio programs, spanning all genres of books, radio shows, interviews, and audio versions of periodicals like The New York Times and The Wall Street Journal.

Subscription Tiers

Audible has transitioned its pricing models over time. In August 2020, the service replaced its Gold and Platinum plans with two new tiers:

• Audible Premium Plus: A credit-based system where users receive monthly credits to redeem for any title.
• Audible Plus: A lower-cost subscription that provides access to a curated on-demand library of audiobooks and podcasts without monthly credits.

Once a title is purchased or redeemed with a credit, it remains in the user's library for permanent access, regardless of the subscription status.
