The Edmonton Elks are a professional Canadian football team based in Edmonton, Alberta. Historical Evolution

Early Football in Edmonton (1895–1939)

Football in the city dates back to 1895 with the Edmonton Rugby Foot-ball Club. Over the decades, various iterations of the team existed, including the Edmonton Eskimos (1910), the Edmonton Elks (1922), and other groups like the Edmonton Boosters and Hi-Grads. However, these early teams often folded or ceased operations due to various factors, including the Second World War.

The Modern Era (1949†)

The current franchise began in 1949 under head coach Annis Stukus. The team quickly found success with stars like quarterback Jackie Parker and running back Johnny Bright, securing three consecutive Grey Cups in the mid-1950s. In 1978, the team moved to Commonwealth Stadium, marking the beginning of a golden era.

Between 1978 and 1982, led by quarterbacks Warren Moon and Tom Wilkinson and head coach Hugh Campbell, the team achieved a record five straight Grey Cup wins. This dynasty, combined with the success of the Edmonton Oilers (NHL), earned the city the nickname "City of Champions" during the 1980s.

Rebranding to the Elks

In 2020, following pressure from sponsors and Indigenous groups, the team retired the "Eskimos" name due to the Native American mascot controversy. After a brief period as the "Edmonton Football Team," the club formally announced its new name, the Edmonton Elks, on June 1, 2021. This name was a nod to a 1922 football club in the city, allowing the team to maintain their interlocked double-E logo.
