Logansport, Indiana History, Culture, and Local Landmarks

Logansport is a city in and the county seat of Cass County, Indiana, United States. With a population of 18,366 as of the 2020 census, the city is strategically located in northern Indiana at the junction of the Wabash and Eel rivers, northwest of Kokomo.

History and Heritage

Settled around 1826, Logansport was named after Captain Logan, a Shawnee warrior who served as a scout for U.S. forces during the War of 1812. The city's growth was heavily influenced by its geography and transportation networks.

Transportation Evolution

The city's name reflects its role as a port; the Wabash and Erie Canal reached Logansport in 1837, contributing the "port" to its name. Additionally, the Historic Michigan Road—one of Indiana's first roads—runs through the city, connecting Madison to Michigan City. Logansport also served as a major railroad hub, hosting various passenger and freight routes, including the famous Wabash Cannon Ball.

Local Landmarks and Culture

One of the city's most cherished landmarks is the refurbished Dentzel Carousel in Riverside Park. As one of the three earliest Dentzel menagerie carousels that remain virtually intact, it is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The tradition of grabbing the brass ring on the carousel has inspired the local economic-development slogan: "Logansport – Cass County: Grab the brass ring."

Logansport Community High School is also notable for having the oldest known high school mascot in Indiana: the animated Felix the Cat, adopted between 1925 and 1926.

Industrial Innovation

In the early 20th century, Logansport was home to the Western Motor Company (formerly Rutenber), founded by Edwin Rutenber, who invented the first four-cylinder automobile engine and various other electric home appliances.

Community Renewal and Preservation

In 2009, Logansport was designated as a Preserve America Community by former First Lady Laura Bush. This designation is awarded to communities that protect their heritage, use historic assets for economic development, and encourage heritage tourism.

The city has also seen recent redevelopment efforts, such as the conversion of the former Logansport Mall into an open-air commercial development known as The Junction.
