The company's journey began in 1904 as Independent Newspapers Limited, founded by William Martin Murphy as the publisher of the Irish Independent. For over a century, the company evolved from a local publisher into a media powerhouse.

The O'Reilly Era

Starting in 1973, (Sir) Tony O'Reilly acquired the company, taking full control of the "A" shares. Under O'Reilly's leadership, the company was floated on the Irish and London Stock Exchanges and expanded its reach into international markets, including the UK, Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa. In 1999, the organization rebranded as Independent News and Media plc.

Transition to O'Brien and Desmond

Following the O'Reilly family's tenure, the company saw a shift in ownership. By May 2012, entrepreneur Denis O'Brien became the largest shareholder, holding a 29.9% stake. This period was marked by financial restructuring, including debt-for-equity swaps and the sale of South African assets to stabilize the company's finances.

The Mediahuis Acquisition

In 2019, a significant shift occurred when the Belgian media group Mediahuis made an ownership bid of €145.6 million. After receiving approval from the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC), the Minister for Communications, and the High Court, the acquisition was finalized on July 30, 2019. The company was subsequently re-registered as a private limited company, ending its time as a public entity.
