NCAA Division I Men's Lacrosse Tournament Guide

The NCAA Division I men's lacrosse tournament is the premier annual event organized by the NCAA to determine the national champion of men's collegiate field lacrosse among Division I members in the United States. Established in 1971, the tournament has been held every year with the exception of 2020.

History and Evolution

Before the inception of the NCAA tournament, the United States Intercollegiate Lacrosse Association (USILA) awarded the Wingate Memorial Trophy from 1936 through 1970 to the collegiate champion based on regular season records. The 1971 tournament replaced these awards, marking a new era of competitive postseason play.

Over the decades, the tournament field has expanded and contracted to accommodate the growth of the sport. Originally consisting of eight teams, the field grew to 10 in 1986, 12 in 1987, 16 in 2003, 18 in 2014, and 17 in 2017. More recently, the size has varied, reaching 18 teams in 2022 and 2025, and 17 teams in 2023 and 2024.

Dominant Programs and Notable Achievements

Syracuse University has emerged as the most successful program in the NCAA era, securing 10 national titles. Close behind is Johns Hopkins, which has claimed 9 national titles. Princeton is a recent powerhouse, winning its seventh title in 2026, ending a 25-year championship drought.

While the sport has historically been concentrated in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic states, its reach has expanded. Only eight schools from outside these regions—including Air Force, Butler, Denver, Marquette, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Michigan, and Utah—have participated in the tournament. Notably, Denver became the first team west of the Eastern Time Zone to win the national championship in 2015.
