Plainville is a charming town located in Hartford County, Connecticut, United States. As part of the Capitol Planning Region, it serves as a vibrant community with a population of 17,525 as of the 2020 census.

History

European settlement in Plainville began around 1650. Initially, the land was incorporated as part of the nearby town of Farmington. However, by 1869, Plainville separated from Farmington. This independence was driven by the distance from the town center and the rapid growth of Plainville's own downtown area, which was spurred by the installation of the New York, New Haven and Hartford Railroad and the Hartford, Providence, and Fishkill Railroad.

Geography

Plainville covers a total area of 25.3 square kilometers (9.8 sq mi), with 9.7 square miles being land and 0.077 square miles being water. The town's eastern border is defined by two prominent peaks of the Metacomet Ridge: Pinnacle Rock and Bradley Mountain. The 51-mile Metacomet Trail traverses these peaks, offering scenic views and outdoor recreation.

According to the 2020 census, Plainville is home to 17,525 people with a population density of 1,800 inhabitants per square mile. The racial makeup is predominantly White (87.1%), with significant Asian (4.0%) and Hispanic or Latino (10.3%) populations. The median age of residents is 43.8 years.
