Roberto Fico Career and Political Journey in Italy

Roberto Fico (born 10 October 1974) is a prominent Italian politician who has held several high-ranking positions within the Italian government and regional administration. As of 9 December 2025, he serves as the President of Campania.

Early Life and Education

Born in Naples to a middle-class family, Fico pursued communication studies at the University of Trieste. During his academic tenure, he participated in an Erasmus exchange at the University of Helsinki. He graduated in 2001, submitting a thesis that explored the social and linguistic identity of Neapolitan neomelodic music.

Before entering politics, Fico's professional background was diverse. He worked in various roles, including positions in press offices, hotel management, as a tour operator manager, in a call center, a butcher's shop, and as a small importer of fabrics from Morocco.

Rise in Politics and the Five Star Movement

Fico's political journey began on 18 July 2005, when he founded one of the forty "Friends of Beppe Grillo" meetups in Naples, a precursor to the formation of the Five Star Movement (M5S). While his early attempts to secure executive office—running for President of Campania in 2010 and Mayor of Naples in 2011—resulted in low vote percentages, his influence within the party grew.

In December 2012, Fico won the M5S parliamentary primary election with 228 preferences, leading to his election to the 17th Italian Parliament in February 2013, representing the Campania 1 constituency.

Legislative Roles and RAI Supervision

In June 2013, Fico was elected Chairman of the RAI Supervision Commission. During his tenure, he focused on transparency and accessibility, introducing live streaming of auditions on the Chamber of Deputies' web TV and mandating that the public broadcaster respond to questions within 15 days. He also renounced his function allowance and personal car associated with the role.

Fico's efforts toward corporate transparency were further integrated into the 2015 RAI reform, which required the public company to disclose the remuneration of senior managers and editorial departments.

President of the Chamber of Deputies

In March 2018, Fico was re-elected to Parliament in the Napoli–Fuorigrotta constituency with 57.6% of the vote. On 24 March 2018, he was elected President of the Chamber of Deputies with support from the M5S, the League, Forza Italia, and Brothers of Italy.

During his presidency, he played a key role in attempting to break political deadlocks, receiving an exploratory mandate from President Sergio Mattarella in April 2018 to facilitate government formation between the M5S and the Democratic Party. His term was also marked by his vocal opposition to the immigration and security policies of then-Interior Minister Matteo Salvini.

Political Views and Advocacy

Fico is recognized as a leader of the left-wing faction within the Five Star Movement. He has consistently advocated for progressive social policies, including:
