SLC Super Provincial Twenty20 History and Evolution

The SLC Super Provincial Twenty20, originally known as the SLC Inter-Provincial Twenty20, was a premier domestic Twenty20 cricket competition in Sri Lanka. Organized by Sri Lanka Cricket, it served as one of the three primary Inter-Provincial tournaments, providing a platform for local talent to showcase their skills in the shortest format of the game.

History and Evolution

Before the transition to provincial tournaments, Sri Lanka held a Twenty20 tournament conducted between clubs from 2004 to 2008. Starting in 2008, the Inter-Provincial Twenty20 became the mainstream domestic T20 competition.

Inaugural and Early Seasons

The Wayamba Elevens dominated the early years of the competition. They won the first three tournaments, securing victories in the inaugural season and the second and third seasons. While they were successful domestically, their invitation to the 2008 Champions League Twenty20 (CLT20) was not granted, though the tournament itself was eventually cancelled due to the events in Mumbai.

Following their initial success, Wayamba Elevens qualified for the 2009 and 2010 Champions League Twenty20 tournaments based on their subsequent titles.

The Rise of Ruhuna Elevens

The fourth season marked a shift in dominance. For the first time, a team other than Wayamba Elevens won the title, with the Ruhuna Elevens claiming victory. This win allowed them to qualify for the qualifying stage of the 2011 Champions League Twenty20 in India.

Transition to Super Fours and Super T20

The competition underwent several changes in format and naming. In 2012, it was intended to be replaced by the Sri Lanka Premier League (SLPL), but due to corruption allegations and the refusal of franchises to pay fees, the SLPL was cancelled. This led to the revival of the tournament in 2013 as the Super Fours Provincial T20 Tournament.

The 2013 edition was a condensed 4-team tournament consisting of only seven matches, all held at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo. Teams were renamed as Basnahira Greens, Uthura Yellows, Kandurata Maroons, and Ruhuna Reds, led by captains such as Angelo Mathews, Dinesh Chandimal, and Lasith Malinga.

The Final Season Super T20 Provincial Tournament

The seventh and final season was rebranded as the Super T20 Provincial Tournament. This edition featured five teams categorized by district rather than province: Hambantota Troopers, Colombo Commandos, Galle Guardians, Kurunegala Warriors, and Kandy Crusaders. The Colombo Commandos emerged as the champions of this final season.

Team Structure

Initially, teams were based on the provinces of Sri Lanka. The first three tournaments featured six teams, including representative teams from schools or Sri Lanka Cricket. In the fourth season, this was reduced to five provincial teams plus a Combined Provinces team. By the final iterations, the number of teams was further reduced.
