University of York Boat Club History, Racing and Community

The University of York Boat Club (UYBC) is the premier rowing organization for the University of York. Established in 1963 by Richard Miles, the club provides a comprehensive rowing environment for students and the wider community, operating out of its boathouse located along the River Ouse in Fulford, York.

Club Structure and Membership

The UYBC is designed to be inclusive, catering to various skill levels through five distinct squads:

• Senior Women
• Senior Men
• Novice Women
• Novice Men
• YURow: An inclusive development environment evolved from the former 'White Rose' staff and community club, open to both university members and the general public.

The club has a strong history of diversity and inclusion. In 2016, it became the first UK university boat club to implement an LGBT policy, symbolizing this commitment by adopting rainbow-coloured Wellington boots. At its peak in 2016, it was the university's largest mixed-gender sports club, with over 200 members and a female membership exceeding 50%.

History and Traditions

Founded in October 1963, the club initially relied on the hospitality of the York City Rowing Club for equipment. The club's competitive spirit was ignited in March 1965 at the Yorkshire Head of the River. A pivotal moment in the club's history occurred on May 15, 1965, with the first Roses Boat Race against Lancaster University, a race won by York. This event laid the groundwork for the annual Roses tournament, a multi-sport competition between the two universities.

Kit and Visual Identity

The club's visual identity has evolved over time. While "York" blue was the original colour, the club transitioned to black and gold in 2012 following sports union unification. However, as of 2025, the club has returned to racing in York blue to honor its heritage. The current blade design features a white rose of York on a black background, and the club blazer remains blue with white edging, featuring a modified university crest with crossed rowing oars.

The UYBC maintains a rigorous racing calendar throughout the academic year:

Winter Season (Head Races)

During the winter, the club focuses on endurance and speed in events such as:

Summer Season (Regattas)

The summer focuses on prestigious regattas, including the Durham Regatta, Metropolitan Regatta, Marlow Regatta, and the Henley Women's Regatta. The club has a proud history at the Henley Royal Regatta, qualifying for the Temple Challenge Cup in 2011, 2017, 2021, and 2023.

Jorvik B.C. The Alumni Community

Founded in 2011, Jorvik B.C. serves as the alumni boat club, maintaining a vibrant link between former and current members. The alumni club races under the traditional York Blue colours.

Key annual events for Jorvik B.C. include:

• The Jorvik Dinner in South West London.
• The Henley Royal Regatta Picnic in July.
• The Jorvik vs UYBC boat race, a 400m sprint held every April in Henley on Thames.
