WCMU-FM (89.5 FM) is a prominent public radio station based in Mount Pleasant, Michigan, owned by Central Michigan University. As a member of National Public Radio (NPR), the station provides a news/talk format, alongside a variety of other specialized programming, serving as the flagship of the WCMU Public Radio network, which includes six affiliate stations across Northern Michigan.

Programming Highlights

During the week, WCMU Public Radio focuses on news and talk programming, featuring acclaimed national shows such as Morning Edition, All Things Considered, 1A, Fresh Air, and On Point. Weekends offer a more diverse mix of entertainment, music, and news, including Weekend Edition, Wait Wait... Don't Tell Me!, and This American Life, as well as local music programs like The Juke Joint, Homespun, and Destination Out. Overnight, the station broadcasts programming from the BBC World Service.

History and Evolution

WCMU-FM began its journey on April 6, 1964, as a 10-watt campus radio station operating at 90.1 FM. In its early years, it served the university campus with a wide range of music, including classical, popular, and progressive rock. By 1969, it became an affiliate of the National Educational Radio Network, which evolved into NPR in 1970.

In the mid-1970s, the station moved to 89.5 FM and increased its power to 100,000 watts. In 1978, it began expanding its reach through a network of rebroadcasters in central and northern Michigan, starting with WCML-FM in Alpena. On March 1, 2023, WCMU launched its current format and simultaneously introduced WCMU Classical, a 24/7 classical music service available online, via mobile app, smart speakers, and HD-2 subchannels.

Awards and Recognition

The station has been recognized for its journalistic excellence, winning regional Edward R. Murrow Awards in 2018, 2021, 2022, and 2023. Additionally, it has received multiple awards from the Michigan Association of Broadcasters (MAB), including being named the MAB Public Station of the Year in 2002. Numerous producers and hosts have also earned state-level awards for their contributions to public broadcasting.

Affiliate Network and Technical Challenges

WCMU serves Northern Michigan and the eastern Upper Peninsula through several affiliates, including WCMW in Harbor Springs, WWCM in Standish, WCMZ in Sault Ste. Marie, and WUCX-FM in Bay City. Many of these stations broadcast in HD Radio, offering an HD-2 side channel for WCMU Classical.

In February 2024, a significant fire broke out at the WCML transmitter site, causing WCML-FM and its TV sister station to go off the air. While a temporary setup was constructed to restore signals at 50% power by July 30, 2024, the full power restoration is still pending.
