West Springfield High School Academic Excellence in Virginia

West Springfield High School (often referred to as WSHS) is a prominent public high school located at 6100 Rolling Road in Fairfax County, Virginia. As a key institution within the Fairfax County Public Schools system, it serves approximately 2,750 students from grades 9 through 12, ranking it as the 10th largest high school in the state of Virginia.

History and Campus Development

Established in September 1966, West Springfield High School was created to accommodate the rapidly growing suburban population of Fairfax County. The school's first principal, S. John Davis, went on to have a distinguished career, eventually serving as the superintendent of Fairfax County Public Schools and Virginia's state Superintendent of Public Instruction in 1979.

The campus has undergone several significant upgrades to maintain its facilities:

• 1988-1991 Renovations: Driven by student advocacy, this project added new classrooms in the courtyard and remodeled the library, auditorium, Spartan Hall, and the Career Center.
• 2012-2019 Modernization: A comprehensive $75 million renovation concluded in September 2019. This project introduced a new dance studio, an expanded gymnasium, a redesigned front office, a flexible library space, and a new third-floor science department.

State Assessments and Proficiency

Students at West Springfield consistently outperform state averages on Virginia's Standards of Learning (SOL) assessments. For the 2023–24 academic year, the school reported a 100% pass rate in reading (with 77% proficiency) and a 97% pass rate in mathematics (with 76% proficiency).

Advanced Placement (AP) and Specialized Curriculum

The school offers a robust Advanced Placement program with 23 courses available for the 2024–2025 school year. Approximately 62% of students participate in AP courses, and 73% of those participants earn a score of 3 or higher on at least one exam. Early AP opportunities include AP Human Geography and AP Seminar.

Athletics and School Spirit

The West Springfield Spartans compete in the Patriot District within the 6A Region C (Occoquan Region) of the Virginia High School League (VHSL). The school colors are orange and blue.

The Spartans offer a vast array of sports, including baseball, basketball, football, soccer, lacrosse, and swimming. Notably, the Girls' Volleyball team achieved significant success, winning the Virginia's Class Six State Championship in 2025, as well as the Occoquan and Patriot Region titles in 2024 and 2025.
