Westminster University (Utah) History, Campus, and Academics

Westminster University is a distinguished private university located in the heart of Salt Lake City, Utah. Founded in 1875, the institution has evolved from a preparatory school into a comprehensive university comprising four specialized schools, offering a wide array of undergraduate and graduate programs.

History and Evolution

The university's origins date back to 1875 when it was established as the Salt Lake Collegiate Institute. In 1897, it began offering college-level courses as Sheldon Jackson College, named after its primary benefactor and a Presbyterian minister. By 1902, the institution was renamed Westminster College to reflect a broader Protestant educational approach, drawing its name from the Westminster Confession of Faith.

Over the decades, the institution underwent several transitions. It became the first accredited two-year junior college in the intermountain area in 1945, and by 1949, it had transitioned into a four-year liberal arts university. In a significant move toward inclusivity, Westminster severed its official ties to the Presbyterian church in 1974, welcoming students of all faiths. Most recently, on September 19, 2022, President Bethami Dobkin announced that the institution would be renamed Westminster University starting in the Fall 2023 semester to better reflect its comprehensive academic offerings.

Campus and Facilities

Since 1911, the university has been situated on a 27-acre campus in the Sugar House neighborhood of Salt Lake City, on land donated by Civil War Veteran Colonel William M. Ferry Jr. The scenic campus is characterized by Emigration Creek, which runs directly through the grounds.

The campus features modern athletic and wellness facilities, including the Eccles Health Wellness and Athletics Center (HWAC), which houses an indoor pool, a three-story rock climbing wall, and racket ball courts. To accommodate a growing student population within its urban footprint, the university has expanded into the surrounding community, including the development of "Westminster on the Draw," a seven-floor mixed-use facility providing academic space, business offices, and housing for upper-classmen and graduate students.

Academic Offerings

Westminster University is organized into four primary schools:

The university offers 38 undergraduate majors leading to BS, BBA, BA, and BFA degrees, alongside customized majors and pre-professional tracks for medicine, law, and dentistry. Its graduate portfolio is extensive, featuring 13 degrees including an MBA, Master of Public Health (MPH), and Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP). The Gore School of Business has also introduced the Center for New Enterprise to foster entrepreneurship among its students.
