Plot Summary

The story follows Woodrow Lafayette Pershing Truesmith, a small-town boy whose father was a Marine hero from World War I. To avoid disappointing his mother, he pretends to be fighting overseas while secretly working in a San Diego shipyard.

A chance encounter in a bar leads to a couple of Marines, led by Master Gunnery Sergeant Heffelfinger, discovering Woodrow's secret. In a well-meaning but misguided attempt to help, the Marines tell Woodrow's mother that he is a returning hero. This deception escalates rapidly as the town celebrates him as a war hero, eventually pushing him to run for mayor against the pompous Mr. Noble.

Ultimately, Woodrow confesses his truth at a campaign rally, only to find that the same town that hailed him as a soldier is impressed by his courage in telling the truth, leading them to want him as their mayor regardless.
