Maxwell Institute Research and Scholarship at BYU

The Neal A. Maxwell Institute for Religious Scholarship, commonly known as the Maxwell Institute, is a prominent research center located at Brigham Young University (BYU) in Provo, Utah. The institute is dedicated to the study of religion, with a primary focus on the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS Church). Named after a former LDS Church apostle, the institute serves as a hub for faculty, visiting scholars, and researchers who explore religious texts and theology.

History and Evolution

Established in 2006, the Maxwell Institute began as an umbrella organization for several of BYU's academic initiatives. These original components included the Middle Eastern Texts Initiative (METI), the Center for the Preservation of Ancient Religious Texts (CPART), the Laura F. Willes Center for Book of Mormon Studies, and the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS). Over time, the institute underwent significant restructuring.

Organizational Changes

By 2013, FARMS was fully absorbed into the Willes Center. In 2012, a period of internal tension arose following the removal of Daniel C. Peterson from the editorship of the Mormon Studies Review (formerly the FARMS Review). Following the retirement of director Gerald Bradford in 2015, the institute entered a phase of internal and external review to redefine its mission.

Under the leadership of J. Spencer Fluhman, appointed as director in 2016, the institute announced a new mission statement in March 2018. This restructuring led to the transfer of the Middle Eastern Texts Initiative (METI) to the publisher Brill and the transfer of the Mormon Studies Review to the University of Illinois Press in 2018. In 2020, the institute moved into the south wing of BYU's West View Building.

Scholarship and Research Focus

The Maxwell Institute provides research positions for full-time faculty, post-doctorate researchers, and visiting scholars. While scholars often publish their work in external academic venues, the institute also maintains its own publishing imprint. A central component of the institute is the Laura F. Willes Center for Book of Mormon Studies, which focuses on the study of the Book of Mormon in both ancient and modern contexts.

Academic Activities

• Guest Lectures and Symposia: The institute frequently sponsors workshops, conferences, and guest lectures at BYU.
• Brown Bag Discussions: These weekly sessions allow scholars to workshop current projects and discuss the concept of "disciple-scholarship."
• Student Involvement: The institute employs a large number of student interns and a professional staff of communications and office assistants.

Perspectives and Criticisms

The Maxwell Institute's role as an officially sanctioned venue for LDS theological studies has drawn various criticisms. Some commentators, such as Michael Austin, argue that its publications are carefully curated to support official Church conclusions, potentially limiting honest discussions of controversies. Others, like John H. Brumbaugh, describe the institute as a venue for "Faithful history," which prioritizes building devotion over professional rigor.

Conversely, some voices within LDS apologetics have accused the institute of being too academic and insufficiently faithful. Daniel C. Peterson and William J. Hamblin have expressed concerns that the institute shifted away from the explicit defense of Mormonism, with Hamblin describing the transition from FARMS to the Maxwell Institute as a "hostile takeover." However, these views are disputed by scholars like Nathaniel Givens, who notes that most publications still maintain the ancient origin of the Book of Mormon.
