UPEI Panthers University of Prince Edward Island Athletics

The UPEI Panthers are the official athletic teams representing the University of Prince Edward Island in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, Canada. Competing primarily within the Atlantic University Sport (AUS) conference of U Sports, the Panthers field a diverse range of men's and women's teams, fostering a culture of excellence and competitive spirit in collegiate athletics.

Varsity Sports Programs

The Panthers maintain a strong presence across multiple sports, with several programs achieving significant success at both the conference and national levels.

Basketball

The basketball programs are among the most decorated at UPEI. The Men's Basketball team has secured five AUS conference championships, with their most recent victory occurring in the 2024-25 season. The Women's Basketball team has earned six Atlantic Conference Championships, most recently in the 2019-20 season. That same year, the women's team won a bronze medal at the U Sports Women's Basketball Championship, and Jenna Mae Ellsworth was honored as the U Sports Player of the Year (Nan Copp Award).

Ice Hockey

The ice hockey programs have a rich history of competition. The men's team is tied for the sixth-most Atlantic Conference Championships with six titles, the last of which was won in the 1990-91 season. Notably, NHL player Joel Ward spent four seasons playing for the Panthers.

The Women's Ice Hockey team won its first AUS Conference Championship in the 2011-12 season. The program has also hosted the U Sports Women's Ice Hockey Championship in 2019 and 2022.

Soccer

The Men's Soccer team has won five Atlantic Conference Championships, with their last title in 2002. In 2014, they made history as the first Panther soccer team to win a national medal, securing the bronze at the U Sports Men's Soccer Championship. The Women's Soccer program has also seen individual brilliance, such as Amy Connolly, who was named the CIS Women's Soccer Player of the Year in 2005.

Other Varsity and Club Sports

• Field Hockey: The women's team competes in an Atlantic league for a chance to enter the U Sports playoffs. Notable athletes include Tracy McGee, the 1997-98 U Sports Field Hockey Player of the Year.
• Rugby: The university offers a women's varsity rugby team and a club-level men's rugby team.
• Cross Country Running and Curling: Both sports are represented within the AUS conference.
