Uproxx is an American music, entertainment, and popular culture website and content studio. Founded in 2008 by Jarret Myer and Brian Brater, the platform has evolved from a digital publication into a comprehensive content studio producing original video, podcasts, and journalistic coverage of the arts and sports.

History and Evolution

The company was established by Myer and Brater, who previously co-founded the hip hop label Rawkus Records in 1996. In April 2014, Uproxx was acquired by Woven Digital, an ad network company. This acquisition led to a significant expansion of the company's resources, including an $18 million Series A funding round in December 2014 to grow staff and video development.

Under Woven Digital, Uproxx became a major brand with a monthly viewership of 40 million. The company expanded its portfolio through strategic acquisitions, including Dime Magazine in January 2015 to bolster its sports division and HitFix in 2016 to expand its coverage of film and TV.

Corporate Transitions

In August 2018, Warner Music Group acquired Uproxx and its associated properties. While the purchase price remained undisclosed, the company had previously raised approximately $43 million in investment.

By February 2024, Warner Music Group announced plans to sell its media assets to refocus on its core music business. In April 2024, Jarret Myer partnered with Rich Antoniello and will.i.am to acquire Uproxx, HipHopDX, and Dime Magazine from Warner. This move established Uproxx Studios as an independent company. As part of this new structure, Myer serves as CEO, Antoniello as executive chairman, and will.i.am as chief visionary officer.

Content and Programming

Uproxx focuses on entertainment, fashion, music, and sports. A significant portion of its output is video-based, including original and sponsored series. Notable productions include:

  • Luminaries: An original series profiling young scientists and inventors, which earned a Webby Award nomination in 2015.
  • Human: A sponsored series about traditional artisans, sponsored by Coors Banquet.
  • Uncharted: Power of Dreams: A show profiling rising musicians, sponsored by Honda, which won a Clio Award in 2016.
  • Fresh Pair: A web series hosted by hip-hop producer Just Blaze and sneaker designer Katty Customs.

In addition to video, Uproxx has ventured into podcasting, producing the People's Party with Talib Kweli in 2021 in partnership with Pilot Boy Productions.

Uproxx Music Critics Poll

Since 2018, Uproxx has hosted the Uproxx Music Critics Poll, which tabulates lists from invited music critics to determine the top albums and songs of the year, similar to the legacy Pazz & Jop poll.
