Zomato is a prominent Indian online food ordering and delivery service owned by Eternal Limited. Founded in 2008 by Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah, the platform initially launched as a restaurant aggregator, providing users with essential menu information, reviews, and recommendations. By 2015, Zomato had expanded its reach to more than 20 countries.

Early Years (2008–2010)

The journey began on July 10, 2008, when Deepinder Goyal and Pankaj Chaddah launched FoodieBay while they were both employed at Bain & Company. Driven by their vision, they resigned in November 2009 to dedicate themselves fully to the venture, incorporating the company as DC Foodiebay Online Services Private Limited on January 18, 2010. To avoid potential naming conflicts with eBay and to allow for future diversification beyond food, the website was renamed Zomato in November 2010, followed by the release of its mobile application.

Global Expansion (2011–2015)

Between 2011 and 2015, Zomato aggressively expanded its footprint. In 2011, it covered major Indian cities like Delhi, Mumbai, and Bengaluru. By 2012, it entered international markets including the UAE, UK, and South Africa. Further expansion continued into New Zealand, Turkey, Brazil, and Indonesia in 2013, and Chile, Portugal, Canada, Lebanon, and Ireland by 2015.

A significant milestone occurred in January 2015 with the acquisition of the Seattle-based restaurant discovery portal Urbanspoon, which facilitated Zomato's entry into the United States and Australia, putting it in direct competition with platforms like Yelp and Foursquare.

Transition to Food Delivery (2015’s)

In March 2015, Zomato pivoted toward the food delivery market in India. Initially, it collaborated with hyperlocal logistics firms such as Delhivery and Grab. However, after acquiring Runnr in 2017, Zomato established its own delivery fleet. Other key innovations during this period included the launch of table reservations in 2016 and the Zomato Gold membership program in 2017, which offered dining and delivery discounts.

Recent Developments (2020–Present)

In January 2020, Zomato acquired the India business of Uber Eats in an all-stock deal, significantly increasing its market share to an estimated 52%. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the company diversified into grocery delivery via Zomato Market and introduced contactless dining.

By November 2021, Zomato shifted its strategy to focus primarily on the Indian market and the UAE, exiting other international territories. Recent experiments include Legends (inter-city delivery) and Xtreme (merchant-focused delivery), though both were eventually discontinued due to demand issues.

Security and Social Responsibility

Zomato has faced security challenges, including a breach in 2015 affecting 62.5 million users and another in 2017 involving 17 million records. In response to the latter, the company implemented a bug bounty program to enhance its security posture.

On the social front, Zomato supports Feeding India, a nonprofit organization started in 2014 by Ankit Kawatra, which focuses on hunger relief initiatives across the country.
