Peter Edge CEO of RCA Records and Music Executive

Peter Edge is a prominent English-American record executive who currently serves as the chairman and CEO of RCA Records. With a career spanning several decades, Edge has played a pivotal role in the discovery and development of some of the most influential artists in pop, R&B, and dance music.

Early Life and Education

Born near Coventry, England, Edge's passion for music was ignited by his sister's record collection, which featured legends like Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye. While studying at Coventry Polytechnic, he immersed himself in the music scene, DJing at local radio stations, clubs, and parties. During this time, he formed a friendship with Jerry Dammers, the founder of 2 Tone and The Special AKA.

Edge graduated with honors, earning a degree in Communication Studies, which provided him with a multidisciplinary foundation in film, art, psychology, and sociology.

Professional Career

The Early Years Switch, Chrysalis, and Cooltempo

After graduating, Edge moved to London and began his career as a music researcher for the Channel Four television series Switch. In this role, he booked artists such as Sade and Grace Jones. Simultaneously, he worked as an A&R representative for Chrysalis Music Publishing under Simon Fuller.

In 1985, Edge was recruited by Doug D'Arcy to launch Cooltempo, an imprint of Chrysalis Records. Cooltempo became a leading dance label of the era, reflecting Edge's taste in the burgeoning house and hip hop scenes. The label's roster included pioneering artists such as Doug E. Fresh, Erik B and Rakim, EPMD, and Monie Love, alongside house artist Adeva.

Warner Bros. and Arista Records

Edge joined Warner Bros. Records in 1991, where he worked closely with artists like Meshell Ndegeocello and the Native Tongues collective, including the Jungle Brothers. In 1996, he was introduced to a young Alicia Keys, though she was initially signed by Columbia Records.

Later that year, Edge became the vice president of A&R at Arista Records. At Arista, he signed the trip hop trio Faithless, who sold over 10 million records, and Dido, whose debut album No Angel sold 21 million copies worldwide. He also signed Grammy nominee Angie Stone and eventually reunited with Alicia Keys, serving as the executive producer for her debut album, Songs in A Minor.

J Records and the Rise of RCA

In 2000, Clive Davis founded J Records with funding from BMG, bringing Edge along as a key executive. Alicia Keys' Songs in A Minor was released on J Records, debuting at #1 on the Billboard charts and earning five Grammy Awards. Under Edge's A&R leadership, J Records also released multi-platinum records from Luther Vandross and Jamie Foxx.

As J Records was folded into the RCA Music Group, Edge rose through the ranks, becoming executive vice president of A&R at RCA and later president of A&R for RCA Music Group in 2007. He continued his success with Dido and Alicia Keys, while also developing artists like Jazmine Sullivan and Mario.

CEO of RCA Records

Following a series of industry mergers, Sony Music became the parent company of RCA Music Group. In 2011, Doug Morris appointed Edge as the chief executive officer of RCA Records. Under his leadership, RCA has released hits by global superstars such as Christina Aguilera, Chris Brown, Kelly Clarkson, Miley Cyrus, P!nk, Britney Spears, Justin Timberlake, and Usher.

Edge has also overseen the breakthrough success of contemporary artists including SZA, Childish Gambino, Khalid, H.E.R., and A$AP Rocky. His influence in the music industry has been recognized by Billboard, which has included him on its "Power 100" list for 14 consecutive years starting in 2012.
