University of Malawi History, Colleges and Academic Offerings

The University of Malawi (UNIMA) is a prominent public university established in 1965, serving as a cornerstone of the Malawian government's educational system. Historically, it was composed of several constituent colleges located across Zomba, Blantyre, and Lilongwe. Following a significant delinking process that concluded on May 4, 2021, the university's structure has evolved, with Chancellor College in Zomba now serving as the primary entity under the leadership of Vice-Chancellor Professor Samson Sajidu.

History and Evolution

Founded shortly after Malawi's independence, the University of Malawi began with an initial enrollment of 90 students in Blantyre. Teaching commenced in 1965, and within two years, the university expanded rapidly. The Institute of Public Administration at Mpemba, the Soche Hill College of Education, the Polytechnic in Blantyre, and Bunda College in Lilongwe were integrated as constituent colleges.

In 1973, most of these constituents, excluding the Polytechnic and Bunda College, were merged into Chancellor College in Zomba. Later, in 1979, the Kamuzu College of Nursing became part of the university, and the College of Medicine in Blantyre was established in 1991.

The Malawi Writers Group

Starting in 1970, the university became a hub for an academic and creative community known as the Malawi Writers Group. This group included notable intellectuals and writers such as Jack Mapanje, Steve Chimombo, Barnaba Zingani, and Francis Moto.

Student Activism and Political Movements

The university has a history of student activism. In March 1992, students from Chancellor College and the Polytechnic joined protests in support of a Lenten Pastoral Letter issued by Catholic Bishops, which criticized the government of Hastings Banda. This movement was part of a broader fight for educational freedom and multiparty rule in Malawi.

Additionally, the Youth for Freedom and Democracy (YFD), a student political pressure group, has been critical of national governance and corporate activities, such as those of the Paladin Energy mining company. The group's activities have often led to tensions with authorities, including the arrest of its president, Black Moses, and the controversial death of engineering student Robert Chasowa.

Constituent Colleges and Academics

Chancellor College (Zomba)

Chancellor College, often referred to as 'Chanco', is the largest of the university's constituent colleges. It offers a diverse range of programs across five faculties:

• Faculty of Humanities: Includes departments such as African Languages and Linguistics, English, Philosophy, and Theology.
• Faculty of Science: Covers Biology, Chemistry, Computer Science, Geography, and Mathematical Sciences.
• Faculty of Law: Provides legal education.
• Faculty of Social Science: Includes Economics, History, Psychology, and Sociology.
• Faculty of Education: Focuses on Curriculum and Teaching Studies and Educational Foundations.

The Polytechnic (Blantyre)

The Polytechnic is highly regarded for its technical and vocational training. It offers undergraduate degrees in fields such as accounting, civil, mechanical, and electrical engineering, architecture, and computing. It also provides postgraduate programs in business administration and infrastructure development.

Following its delinking from the University of Malawi, the Polytechnic has transitioned into the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) and has recently launched Malawi's first UniPod.

Former Colleges

The College of Medicine and the Kamuzu College of Nursing delinked from the University of Malawi in 2019 to form the Kamuzu University of Health Sciences (KUHeS).
