Zimbabwe Open University Leading Distance Education

The Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) is a premier open distance education institution in Zimbabwe. Established in 1999, ZOU stands as the only distance education university in the country, providing a unique opportunity for students to earn while they learn. Due to its flexible nature and accessibility, it has grown steadily to become the largest university in Zimbabwe in terms of student enrollment.

History and Evolution

Following independence, the Government of Zimbabwe prioritized "education for all" to build high-skilled manpower. The 5-Year National Development Plan (1991–1995) emphasized that investment in human resources is essential for technological progress and socio-economic growth.

As the University of Zimbabwe could not meet the rising demand for higher education, several commissions were established to explore distance learning. This led to the creation of the Centre for Distance Education (CDE) in 1993, which evolved into the University College of Distance Education (UCDE) in 1996. Finally, on March 1, 1999, it was officially renamed the Zimbabwe Open University (ZOU) by an Act of Parliament, with Professor Peter Dzvimbo serving as the first Vice-Chancellor.

Academic Structure and Programs

ZOU is a multidisciplinary institution offering both degree and non-degree courses across seven faculties. The university is currently expanding its infrastructure, including the construction of its main campus at Hatcliffe.

Faculties and Departments

The university offers approximately 24 programs across the following faculties:

• Faculty of Commerce: The largest faculty, covering Banking, Finance, Accounting, Human Resources, Marketing, and Labour Relations.
• Faculty of Science and Technology: Includes Health Science, Mathematics, Statistics, Geography, and Environmental Studies.
• Faculty of Education: Focuses on Educational Studies and Teacher Development.
• Faculty of Agriculture: Covers Agricultural Management, Animal Production, and Soils and Plant Sciences.
• Faculty of IT and Multimedia Communications: Specializes in Information Technology and Software Engineering.
• Faculty of Applied Social Sciences: Includes Counselling, Development Studies, Disability Studies, Information Science, Peace, and Psychology.
• Faculty of Arts, Culture and Heritage Studies: Covers Heritage Studies, Languages, Literature, Media, Journalism, Religious Studies, and Philosophy.

Course Delivery Methods

To ensure flexibility, ZOU utilizes a variety of delivery methods, including print media, compact cassettes, videocassettes, email, CDs, and radio broadcasts. Students also benefit from monthly face-to-face meetings with tutors at regional centers, and the university is moving toward the integration of telelearning and teleteaching methods.
